Right now is one of the best times in Internet marketing history to make a lot of money online with information products. An information product is a digitally downloadable product, also known as an eBook, or eCourse. However it is not just written books that are downloadable, an information product can also include: audio, video and software.

Even with the popularity of audio and video products, eBooks remain a staple of online publishing and they’ll be around forever.

EBooks offer a quick and easy way for prospects to search and learn about a hot topic. No more running to the nearest book store. A quick search in Google and a person can literally find an eBook on just about any subject imaginable in seconds.

And the good news is that if you want to create your own information products you don’t even have to be an expert on the subject to provide the information. It’s a good idea to have some degree of interest in the subject but you don’t have to be the leading expert. You just need to know how to help the audience get the information that they want.

But before you can start building a profitable eBook business I think it’s really important that you know your rights. Now I’m not talking about  your humanitarian rights, but the different types of rights that exist for eBooks.

EBooks typically come with resell rights, master resell rights or private label rights. I talk more about eBook rights in Build Your eBiz with Resale Rights and PLR.

Now no one can be aware of all the different terms that are set up for different licenses because that largely depends on the author. But if you can have a basic understanding of the general rights that come with most eBooks then you will be in a better position to utilize them to their full potential and avoid any possible legal action that could result if you don’t follow the conditions that are set forth in the licences.

So what is the difference between Resell Rights, Master Resell Rights & Private Label Rights?

To keep it as simple as possible, if you have resell rights, you have the right to resell the product, in conjunction with the terms and conditions set forth in your license. This means that you cannot alter or edit the product in any way, and you cannot put your name on it as the author.

If you have private label rights, however, you can edit and alter the product as you see fit, and you can even put your own name, or your company’s name, on the product as the author. You can also:

•    Change words and chapters
•    Put your name as the author
•    Change the sales page
•    Add graphics
•    Break the product down into several different products
•    Add audio & video

There really are no limits here. This type of license can be a real money spinner if utilized in the correct way and  gives you the opportunity to increase the perceived value of the product and resell it as your own for big profits.

Because you have more freedom with private label rights, these types of products generally cost more to purchase the rights for. Some products even have two options when you purchase them: resell rights or private label rights. In fact, you can use your private label rights products and sell the resell rights to others, after you have changed the product and put your name on it.

There is also a difference between resell rights and master resell rights. Resell rights simply give you the right to resell the product, while master resell rights allow you to resell the product and the resell rights!

Again, it is easy to see how one could be confused with these various terms. However, if given the choice, always go for the private label rights. This will allow you to have a product of your very own, without actually having to create one yourself.  Most private label rights licenses give you much more freedom.

There, I said it…

You see, most people starting out think that there is some big secret to Internet riches when nothing could be further from the truth. Day after day we get promised easy money for doing next to nothing (or even less) so we buy the product in the hope that our dreams will be achieved. Only to find that once again we’ve be suckered in. Can you relate to this? I know I can.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a ton of great products out there and I have bought a hell of a lot of them myself, but they require putting in a great deal of effort if you want to make them work, and when the work is required this is when most people give up and once again start looking for the easy way out. So I will say this again.

STOP LOOKING FOR A PUSH BUTTON SOLUTION!

Look, I have created and sold many many products over the years, all have never claimed to make you rich for doing nothing and most have taken a ton of hard work and effort if you want to make them work for you. I know my methods work but the truth is most people don’t even know this because when they find they need to put some work in they give up and once again start looking for the easy solution. Does this mean my products are rubbish? No!

So my advice to you if you’re not prepared to put some effort in is give up and get out, as cruel as that may sound it’s for your own benefit as you will just keep getting suckered time and time again.

Just unsubscribe from every marketer’s list and go and find a hobby, believe me you will be better off for it.

Or if you want to have a real go at this create a product, this could be anything, an eBook, a report, an audio interview, a series of video tutorials, a membership site, anything. Just do it. There are a ton of courses out there that show you how so don’t make excuses and say you can’t do it.

Then create a squeeze page and start collecting emails. Or stick a PayPal button on your sales page and start promoting your product via the many many traffic methods out there. Or put your product on ClickBank and start recruiting affiliates. Just do something…

Only when you create a product of your own will you start to realize the work that is involved, but the most important thing of all is you will finally realize that there are no push button solutions, and you may finally start to see some results…

Over the weekend I recorded my very first video interview from my office.

I sat with Dave Nicholson and we discussed how he has managed to generate 1000s of followers on Twitter on complete autopilot.

As this was the first time either of us had done anything like this the video is a little ‘raw’ in places but the content is fantastic.

Please note that this post is really just a bit of fun but I suppose it can be taken seriously if you want to take things to the next level. Just have a read and see if you have made it past the crucial level, if not you know what to do.

Level 1: You have absolutely no idea how to make money online, in fact you are so sceptical you think it can’t really be done and the only people who make money online are scammers.

Level 2: Curious, you start to search ‘make money online’ and you can’t believe how much info is out there. Hmm, maybe there is something in this make money online game after all.

Level 3: You buy your first ‘make money’ product and are devastated when you can’t understand a thing the product is talking about. You need to learn more.

Level 4: In order to learn more you need to research and you find that most of your research involves signing up for newsletters and offers, browsing forums and searching Google. You end up buying a few more products that promise easy online riches.

Level 5: Wow, this is harder than you thought. The last product I bought said this would be easy but it isn’t. Hmm, maybe the next product will help me. All the time you are learning but you never really do anything with the information that you learn.

STOP! If you are at this level you are going nowhere, you need to make it to level 6 fast as at the moment you are just bouncing between levels 4-5

Level 6: Luckily you have been on John Thornhill’s mailing list and this blog post has suddenly made you realise that you simply must be creating your own products to generate income and build a list. So you have a go and you find it’s actually not that difficult once you get going.

Level 7: Wow, people are buying my product, people are buying my product. I can’t believe it, and look at how many people are signing up for my mailing list

Level 8: You rinse and repeat levels 6 and 7 (sure beats rinsing and repeating levels 4 and 5) and find you make even more money from your second product than you did your first. You ask yourself is it really as easy as this?

Level 9: Now you ‘get it’ you simply keep pumping out new products, keep building your lists and keep providing  value to your subscribers, nothing too drastic, just 4-6 new products a year and each new launch is more successful than the last. You’ve made it; you phone your boss and tell him to stick his job where the sun doesn’t shine.

Level 10: You now start to live the life you dreamed of, you have more time to spend doing what you love most, living life and spending time with your loved ones. You go to work when you want and work the hours that suit you. Your friends who doubted you can’t believe what you have achieved, but at the same time they can’t believe they can do it, this is because they are still at level one, but luckily you left that level a long time ago.

Never ever forget that the real money is in creating your own products and services. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise…

I just had to get this post out to you as soon as I could!

You see, yesterday, I was sitting in the garden, having a short break from things, when it suddenly hit me. I realised that something that was absolutely essential for my online success, had taken place almost automatically. I wanted you to share this, because when you become aware of it yourself, it can’t fail to also help you to make significant progress.

I’ve now been following the coaching program of my mentor – Alex Jeffreys for about three weeks now – in parallel to learning some very useful techniques with yours truly – John Thornhill. I’ve learnt some key principles that are crucially important to my (and your) online success.

Now, it’s a simple fact that my mentor has been highly motivating, asking me to ‘take action’, using the statement; “don’t get it right, just get it going”; which of course is correct. If you needed proof, just take a look at what I’ve done in those three weeks.

I’ve put my own fully functioning blog on line, involving domain names, hosting, WordPress themes, email setups, plugins etc., and I’ve uploaded a website that links to my free list building report, involving more domain names, squeeze page editing, opt-in forms, Aweber, uploading files to my website etc – and believe me, that’s only the half of it.

Now, the last thing I’m trying to do here is put you off or scare you in any way – remember, I’m here to share my experience with you and to help you succeed.

But – and this is an important ‘but’ – if the thought of actually taking action and getting really involved, does cause you negative thoughts and a dread of getting started, then you’re almost certainly not currently in the correct frame of mind.

Here’s a very famous statement from one of the first mass producers of automobiles in America, which you’ve probably seen before but nevertheless, you’ll see is extremely powerful and very true:

“If you think you can, or think you can’t, you are always right” Henry Ford.

Just contemplate this statement for a moment and you will see exactly where I’m coming from and what I’m trying to help you with.

What epitomises that statement more than anything else I think, is this true story of Henry Ford’s approach to a particular problem that he was determined to solve.

Henry Ford manufactured the first V-8 car engine. But it took Determination, Vision, Persistence and an absolute and unwavering Belief (amongst other things).

Henry Ford had a team of designers and engineers, who he instructed to design and build a V-8 engine. Right from the start, this team told Henry that it was impossible to cast an eight cylinder engine block in one piece.

Nevertheless, Henry paid their salaries and instructed them not to worry about it, but just to get on and produce it anyway.

Each time Henry met with his team, he was met with the same old excuses, but he simply told them to stay on the job until they succeeded, no matter how long it took. Well, the rest is history, because the secret (if there was one) of producing an eight cylinder engine was discovered by Ford’s team.

The message to take from this is that Ford succeeded because his Desire, his Determination and his Belief were unwavering. Even in the face of the extreme negativity of his design team, right from the outset.

They only achieved what they did, because eventually, Ford’s determination and belief that this engine will be produced, finally eradicated their own negative thoughts. They at some stage must have also started to believe that success was achievable. They would have certainly started to make small gains, taking definite steps towards their ultimate goal, gradually being more and more aware that success wasn’t far away.

I’m sure by now, you’ve got the main message that I’ve been trying to get across to you – right?

Your mind, your thoughts, your outlook and your overall approach to your main goals is crucial to your ultimate success. Now I’ve only just scratched the surface here when it comes to the incredible power of your mind and how you can make real progress with the right attitude and approach.

If you’re really serious about your online marketing success (or with anything that you want to succeed in), why not give yourself the best possible start you could.

By taking the right approach to understanding your current situation, you can effectively evaluate exactly where you currently are in your thinking – this is CRUCIAL by the way. Once you have this knowledge, you can then take some definite, targeted action to empower your own mind to deliver you the success you desire.

I decided I wouldn’t go into the office today.

I had planned to but the sun is shining here in the UK, something that has been a rare occurrence lately so I decided I’d take my family to Whitby for the day. Then I’m off to the Yorkshire dales for a couple of days visiting friends.

This made me realise just a few short years ago this would not be possible. How many people are lucky enough to say ‘sod it’ I’m not going into work today?

Now I’m not trying to brag here, I’m trying to let you know that if I can do this anyone can.

I come from a background where the only jobs I qualified for was factory work and manual labour. In fact I worked as a human robot for over 10 years in a car plant. So if you can relate to this it can be done.

In fact I still have to pinch myself because of the lifestyle I lead. Let me give you an example…

This year my oldest son turned 17 and straight away he started to learn to drive, he passed his driving test in May and a week later I bought him his first car with one years insurance. Ouch! Insuring a 17 year old is expensive.

The point I am trying to make here is a few years ago I could never afford to pay for my sons driving lessons never mind buy him a car.

And all this has happened because I sell information on the Internet. Never forget people are prepared to pay for information. Information you can create.

So if you are just starting out and wondering if it can be done, it can. The information age is still in it’s infancy. Anyone can sell information on the Internet and that includes you!

But you have to keep it going, you have to keep churning out product after product.

In fact I have released a brand new information product this week and I plan to release another in a few weeks time but as it’s something I enjoy doing I don’t see it as real work.

Work used to be waking up to an alarm and being told what to do, do you know I even had to ask to use the toilet, how degrading is that? Now I get up when I wake up. I do what I want when I want and that sure beats building cars for a living.

So if you are reading this and you still haven’t created your first information product do it, it really could change your life.

Now this is where I should recommend a product but that’s not what this post is about, it’s about letting you know you can change your life by selling information. In fact if you need help creating a product let me know and I’ll see what I can do to help.

I just want to show you if I can do it believe me anyone can.

PLR reports and ebooks can be just the thing when you want to have your own product but don’t have the time, ability, or inclination to create your own.  Having an ebook ghostwritten is another option, but it might not be the right one for you when you’re just starting out, don’t have much traffic, and don’t have the money to pay a ghostwriter.

PLR reports and ebooks come ready made, but sticking your name on them and putting them out there for sale is not all there is to it.  No, you’ve got to make some changes in order to make people happy and put out a valuable product you will be proud to call your own.

Here are the mistakes I see people making with their newly purchased PLR:

Mistake #1 – PLR used “as is”.
Don’t grab the PLR and turn around and slap it up on your site and send out a promo email to your list.  Think of the PLR product you just purchased as the start of something big.  You need to make some changes not only to benefit your customer but to benefit yourself.

Mistake #2 – Not fixing the sales page.
Look for instructions, usually in red or highlighted and [in brackets] that tell you to add something, like your link or your picture.  Nothing screams PLR more than seeing a sales page where the person hasn’t even bothered to take out the [instructions] and add the necessary links or graphics.

You’ll also want to tamper with the copy. Change it up.  Add your story and take out the writer’s story.  Make the benefits even more compelling.  And for pet sake, change the other guy’s name at the bottom of the copy to your own!

Mistake #3 – Graphics not changed.
If you use the same graphics (and title), some people are going to recognize the product.  They might even realize they’ve seen it quite a few times and begin to think the product is probably really lame PLR.  They certainly won’t think too highly of you and will question the value of all your products.

Mistake #4 – Links on the sales page don’t work.
How many times have you clicked on the links in a sales page and find they didn’t work? It seems this happens more with PLR products, maybe because people didn’t start the whole product process from scratch or maybe because they’re in a hurry to get the PLR “live” and start making money from it.  So test your links.

Mistake #5 – No links were added inside the product.
Think about why you bought the PLR report or ebook in the first place and what you want to have it accomplish for you.  Don’t consider it as just something to give your list.  Steer it in a particular direction.  Add links in the body for products you’re promoting, either yours or affiliate products that can help the reader out.  End it not so much with a conclusion as a beginning of something bigger and better – like your big ticket product, your membership site, or your coaching offer.  If you don’t have those then become an affiliate for someone else’s big launch, membership site, or coaching program.  Your purchased PLR should do at least double duty for you.

If it’s a PLR article that you’re going to post on your blog, add your links to it.  Change the conclusion of the article to point to a product you sell that will solve the reader’s problems.

Mistake #6 – Value not added.
You can’t change just the graphics and title. Someone might buy it and feel tricked when they realize they’ve bought it before and it’s exactly the same except for the pretty new cover. There goes your reputation.  The best thing to do?  Always add value; it’s not that hard.

•    Explain some of the bullet points in more detail.
•    Add more bullet points.
•    Include some real life examples or stories.
•    Throw in a case study or two.
•    Add screen shots.
•    Add Camtasia videos showing how to do things mentioned in the product.

There is always something you can do to not only change it but to add value.  It might take you some time, but not near as much as creating a product from scratch.

Mistake #7 – Not using keywords.
Don’t forget your keywords!  Take the time to find the best longtail keyword phrases and use them in the title, the sales copy, the articles if you’re using PLR articles, and anywhere else you find that’s appropriate. Using your keywords brings another element to your marketing by capturing organic traffic.

Mistake #8 – Throwing it on a website and expecting it to sell.
Even if you did make changes to the product and you’re quite proud of it, you still have to market it, just like with any product.  There are many ways to do this – article marketing, emailing your list, PPC, WSO on the Warrior Forum, cross promoting with other marketers, eBay, email swaps, affiliates, etc.  Get busy!

PLR reports and ebooks are the perfect place to start when you want to have a product to call your own. But using PLR is not just for the beginner; many marketers successfully use PLR to crank out product after product – just ask John about that.
